Gargoyles Mega-post

This show is amazing! Even after all this time, it's still better than most things currently on the air. For a so called "kid's show" the writing, characterization, and voice acting are all of higher quality than even most adult aimed animation.

I'm of the firm belief that you can't judge a show by it's first season. Most shows need a season to establish everything and give the writers a chance to find their footing. Even when a first season does seem to stand out, more often than not, the later seasons will improve so drastically that you wonder why you enjoyed the first season as much in the first place.

This show does such a great job that everything is established by the end of the pilot alone. OK, the pilot's a five parter, but that's still pretty good all things considered.

If the pattern holds true for this show, that the second season is drastically better than the first, than I really can't wait to see what's in store.

Most shows nowadays have arcs, while throwing in some stand alone episodes to mix it up. This show manages to do both simultaneously. Even the stand alone episodes impact the overall story and everything builds on what happened before.

Many say that this was Disney's attempt to compete with the success of Batman: The Animated Series. I could see that being the case, and while it isn't groundbreaking the same way B: TAS was, the show does hold it's own in that particular face off, which is impressive. It's also important to note that this was a show drastically different in tone from the other things they had at the time, so it did pave new ground in it's own way.

I've mentioned Keith David's voice work a few times already, but it bears repeating. Hearing him voice Goliath is just a joy.

Cartoons in the 90's were awesome, it's just a simple fact. I was lucky to grow up in that particular time period. It's sad that given the quality of a lot of those shows, the animation age ghetto still exists. This show is further proof of that.

The show has gotten a DVD release for the most part. They released the first season in a complete set, but for some reason they decided to break season 2 into two volumes. One volume has been released, but fans eagerly await the second half. There was a third season, but the general impression I've gotten is that it jumps the shark by that point.

If you haven't seen this series, I highly recommend it. It really is awesome.
