Hellsing

I discovered this series back in college, and have watched it a couple of times since then, but I forgot how freaking awesome this series is.  This, even more than Firefly, is a show that was taken from us too early and needs to be brought back.

When people talk about the bad-assery of this show, the prime topic of discussion is Alucard. It's well warranted, as he is freaking cool, but I think some credit should go to his boss, Sir Integra Wingates Hellsing.  While she (and yes that's a female, I know the name and look of the character make it ambiguous, but it's a woman) doesn't play as prominent a role as the aforementioned vampire, she has quite a few crowning moments of awesome herself.  It's always fun to watch her anytime she gets really worked up and goes on about her family's honor.  She gives these awesome speeches that just make me giddy.

Another really strong aspect of this show is the soundtrack.  I love the main theme, but even the leitmotifs that permeate the series are really well done and do a great job augmenting the feel of the scenes that unfold before you on the screen.  They did release two soundtrack albums, but from what I understand, even that doesn't collect every song from the series.  I'm not sure if a volume 3 is planned, though at this point, I find that unlikely.

Why this DVD boxset is out of print is beyond me, as this series totally rocks your socks.  Fortunately, you can still buy used copies, but it's disheartening to see it shoved to the side like that.  Luckily, it's not completely lost, ridiculously hard to find, or terribly expensive so those who are curious still have a way to check out the series.  I highly recommend it as I've had a blast watching it again.

I haven't seen Hellsing Ultimate, it does intrigue me though, and I do intend to check it out at some point.
