Think about it, in that world there is a person capable of leveling a building simply by opening his eyes, another who can control the magnetic field of the entire planet, and another who can not only read your thoughts, but control them as well. That's not even a half dozen of them. Imagine a whole demographic of people with these sorts of powers. We, the regulars, are supposed to just smile, wink and say "That's cool dude, you do what you do", that is sheer nonsense in my opinion.
Look, if mutants did emerge, we shouldn't give into hate or react violently. We should do all we can to bring about peace, but it's not simply a matter of us overcoming our prejudices because the fact is that in this particular situation, we have every right to be scared. This isn't a matter of skin color or sexual preference, these people present a real threat. The only character to really bring up these concerns was Senator Kelly and when he said it, it was never sincere, just a front so he could push his anti-mutant agenda. In short, he was a bigoted schmuck. Beast too, brought up these fears on occasion but was always scolded for siding with the enemy and was never met with more of an argument then, "nuh uh".
Magneto is probably the worst of them. I couldn't possibly imagine how horrible his childhood was. To say that the Holocaust was a dark time is an extreme understatement. Given that, I can see why he'd believe that humans would react the same way to mutants as the Nazis did to the Jewish back in the 40's, but come on! There is a huge difference between being Jewish and being able to hurl cars at people with nothing more then a flick of your wrist. I'm going on record here and now to say that I am calling shenanigans on Magneto.
It doesn't help that whenever the humans try to level the playing field by creating ways to keep metas and/or mutants in check, insuring they don't come to believe that they are above the law, the aforesaid humans are then portrayed as jerks and bigots when all they're trying to do is protect the lives of innocent people, human and mutant alike. Instead, all the mutants cry prejudice and the situation never resolves itself.
We all know that the society in X-Men comics will never come to accept them, after all that would mark the end of the comic. They better pray that the mutant-human war that Magneto has been trying to launch doesn't come to pass because honestly, we'd get our butts handed to us. They should continue preaching tolerance in the comic, don't get me wrong, I think that it is a good message to send, especially to the kids who hopefully grow up and enjoy these stories into adulthood, but at the same time it should be modified to be more realistic as the analogy from mutant to homosexual is not a good one.
