I had heard a lot about this web series/alternate reality game called "Marble Hornets". It's supposed to be one of the definitive parts of the "Slenderman" mythos and I had heard that it was really well done all around. After hearing a lot of good things, I decided to check it out.
Truthfully, it didn't grab me at first. I sat down and watched the first dozen or so "entries" and was left cold. Well, the other day, I decided to give it another shot and have made it through all of the entries that have been posted so far.
It takes a while to get going, as evidenced by my first attempt, but once things get rolling, it really does get quite good. It gets genuinely creepy and it does jump scares well. Yes, you read that right, jump scares done well. There's no score, so there's no loud orchestral sting. While things will make you jump in your seat, it's a result of genuine tension and suspense.
I wouldn't advise watching this with headphones as some of the audio distortions can get a bit loud, but beyond that, this is definitely worth watching. The first two "seasons" are available on DVD, but I think that this works better being watched on YouTube. It adds to the atmosphere of the series and I think that something would be lost if you sat down on the couch and tried to watch it on a regular television screen. The DVDs do come with commentaries that are supposed to be highly entertaining (along with some other behind the scenes stuff), and, if nothing else, you'd help support great content, so there's that.
I almost wish more people used YouTube for stuff like this. Vlogs are OK, and funny cat videos are...funny.
Nice one.
Shut up, brain! The point is that it would be nice to see more original content with engaging plots and characters as opposed to people lip syncing to "Call Me Maybe" or doing the Gangnam dance. It doesn't necessarily need to be of the horror genre or even go the ARG route, but it just shows that YouTube is an outlet that isn't being fully utilized.
You can check out the series on YouTube here. If you do want to pick up the DVDs, you can purchase them here.
