On September 30, the long awaited sequel to Marvel Ultimate Alliance will be released. Now, I'm a huge fan of the original. Some people complain, but I don't really get it. I Mean, it's everything you'd want out of a superhero game. You've got a large cast of characters to choose from, the story was well done, the controls were solid, the graphics were stellar. The bar's set pretty high, but I'm sure that they put just as much effort into this as they did the last game.
One thing I noticed is that the character list is kind of lacking. It does have a bunch of characters from the first game, and some new ones, but the list of characters for the original was like 20 something, plus 8 more that were downloadable from Xbox Live. This game should have every character from the first one and then some. Maybe they've kept some secret as a surprise, or maybe they just felt that if I want to play as one of the characters from the original, I could just play the original but I figured that they would try to kick things up a notch on the sequel.
For the most part I'm OK with them using Civil War as the inspiration for the game, but what about that Galactus teaser we had at the end of the first one? Will he be making an appearance? That seems like a pretty big loose end to leave unresolved. I also kind of find it ironic that the game is called "Fusion" while using a story that split the heroes into two factions.
Actually, the fusion the title refers to is the coordinated combo attacks that will be available for certain characters. I've only seen a few, but they look pretty freakin sweet. I think they'll add a new level to the gameplay as well as some extra coordination between players.
One thing I don't get is the fact that the game opens with Nick Fury attacking Latveria. Why? Doom's long gone, imprisoned by Odin for his actions in the first game. Does he escape? Possibly, he is Doom after all. That's one of those things I'm just going to have to wait for.
Here's a small piece of trivia, Nintendo was originally planning on having Link (yes, Legend of Zelda Link) as a playable character on the Wii version of the first game. They backed out, but since they have the character design all set up, Ihope they add him in the second, even if it is as a download later on down the line. My roommates don't seem to get the awesomeness of having Link fighting alongside Spider-Man or Captain America, but I sure do. It warms the cockles of my nerd heart.
Much like movie fans waited eagerly for Nolan to follow up Batman Begins, so have I been eagerly awaiting the release of this video game (though I eagerly awaited TDK's release too) and I'm not even a Marvel guy. As a comic geek, this is a major release in my opinion. I hope that it meets the expectations set by the first game and delivers an awesome playing experience.
