River Merrimac Bar and Grill

*Originally published on 1/30/09

During a recent trip to Massachusetts with my family, we visited a local restaurant. I should say upfront that this place is owned by my cousin. It won't come into the equation as I would be honest either way, I just wanted you readers to know that before you started reading.

The food is actually pretty darn good. I ordered the Lobster Mac and Cheese. Most of the menu is steak and filet mignon. I am not one to turn down mac and cheese so I went with that instead. It was cheesy and the lobster was delicious. I'm not even a big fan of lobster. It's mixed in so you don't need to deal with all the crushing and breaking apart the thing like you normally do. It tastes just like little pieces of shrimp soaked in cheese. The pasta was well cooked but not so cooked that it was crunchy or burnt. It's a big plate of it so it will fill you up. You definitely get your money's worth as far as food servings and price go.

Everyone in my family was deeply pleased with their own dishes. There was not one complaint to be heard. There is the possibility that the family aspect may be a factor, but I'm sure that they would've spoken up if they really weren't happy with the food. It was raves and praise all around.

For dessert I had this warm chocolate fudge cake. Sweet mother of crap, that thing was good. It was warm and gooey, so much so that it practically melted in my mouth. It's only flaw was that it was small so I couldn't have more. It is rich and chocolaty, if you like chocolate like I do you really need to try that cake as it is divine.

My cousins and aunts raved about the place before we went. They went on about how every dish on the menu was delicious and how great it all was. I can happily say that it was not over-hyped as I was greatly satisfied with my meal. The way that they talked, I was sure that I would be let down as, like anything else, anything that hyped up can't possibly live up. Well the food did live up to the hype and then some.

The service was great as well. Our waitress was prompt, courteous, amicable and conversational. Even though we had a rather large party, the food came out quickly and there was no confusion or need to send anything back.

If you are in the area, I highly suggest that you look this restaurant up in the phone book and check it out as it is a great dining experience.

*Alas, I don't think the restaurant is open anymore. It's a shame as the food was quite good, but what can you do?
