"Upcoming" Blurays

*Originally published 1/19/09

This is by no means a comprehensive list, merely the titles that stuck out to me. For a complete list, you can to to www.bluray.com.

Election: This amusing, albeit odd movie features Matthew Broderick as a school teacher who tries to sabotage the election of one of his students as he finds her annoying. It's not as great as it could've been but both Broderick and Witherspoon turn in strong performances. It's a decent movie

The Express: One of the many feel good underdog sports films. I haven't seen it, but if it's as good as Remember the Titans or Coach, than it is definitely worth seeing. Though I'm still waiting for The Chris Mullin or Larry Bird story.

King Kong: Peter Jackson's film may not have been able to top Lord of the Rings, but this film will look stunning on Bluray. Watching a gorilla take on not one, not two, but three dinosaurs is what hi-def was made for. There are also some tender, and rather beautiful scenes between the titular character and Naomi Watts' character.

The Notebook: The definitive chick flick, I know. But as it has its fans I wouldn't want to dismiss mentioning it simply because it doesn't appeal to my tastes.

The Pink Panther: An atrocious remake that's only redeeming factor was a glorious cameo by Clive Owen.

1/27

The Bourne collection: The entire trilogy in stunning 1080p picture. While I wasn't crazy about these movies, I can say that I am certain that they will look great on bluray.

Groundhog Day: A classic. Comedies may not seem like they lend themselves to high def but if you don't have this film in your collection, now you have the perfect chance to do so.

Hulk Vs. A double feature where the mighty green giant goes toe to toe with both Wolverine and Thor. The trailers look pretty darn good, so comic fans will definitely have to check this one out.

2/3

Office Space: Do I really need to tell you why this movie is worth picking up? It's a cult classic that perfectly nails the experience of working in an office.

The Cure Trilogy: Like the concert blurays that have been released. This bluray will feature a live concert that features the tracks from their three albums Pornography, Disintegration, and Bloodflowers. As a big fan of The Cure, I believe I may have to pick this one up.

2/10

Donnie Darko: A flat out weird movie that will have you discussing it long after viewing. This dark film features a great performance by Jake Gyllenhaal as well as a guy in a creepy bunny suit. What more could you ask for?

Dragonball Z: Super Android 13/Bojack Unbound: As the double feature of the two Broly movies created a gap. This bluray will even it out. They won't be in order, but as they're self contained it won't matter. If you're a fan of the guilty pleasure that is Dragon Ball Z than this is worth picking up.

2/24

Akira: A classic post apocalyptic movie as well as a revolutionary work of animation. This is a must buy for anime fans as well as movie fans in general as it is a classic in the truest sense.

Futurama: Into the Wild Green Yonder The fourth Futurama Direct to video release makes it to Bluray as its predecessor did.

Again, this is hardly a comprehensive list. You can go to www.bluray.com for a more in depth list.

The Arrival

Remember this movie? It came out at about the same time as Independence Day only didn't do nearly as well and was practically forgotten. Well, not enough people remembered that it's getting the high def treatment.

Frost/Nixon

I haven't seen this movie. I have, however, heard good things about it. It documents the infamous interviews between former President Richard Nixon and reporter David Frost. Frank Langella got high praise for his performance. It's hard to believe that's the same guy who played Skeletor. He was also quite good as Perry White.

Hellraiser

I've only seen bits of this movie, but I mock it because Pinhead is a ridiculous villain. I mean, look at him, he looks silly*.

*Having seen the films now, I can say that Pinhead is actually a worthy adversary and, at the very least, the first two movies are worth checking out.

Notorious

This movie documents the life of Biggie Smalls, better known as the Notorious BIG. The film goes in depth and tells us why he likes it when you call him big poppa, actually that's not true. He does like it however.

Sin City

Yeah, this movie was awesome. Mickey Rourke was perfect as Marv and the rest of the cast did a stellar job. It's visually stunning, well written, and the performances were all great. The movie lends itself to high definition. This is a must buy in my opinion.

The X-Men Trilogy

After getting stuck with just X3, we are finally getting a boxset of all three X-Men films.

4/28

The Reader

This was another academy award darling. It's got Kate Winslet and she always does quality work.

Star Trek TOS: Season 1

Sci-fi geeks can kick it old school with this boxset.

5/12

This is a slim week too. I do find it odd, however, that they are releasing a box set of the Star Trek trilogy (Star Treks II, III, and IV) while also releasing a complete set featuring all six original series movies, why? It doesn't make any sense.

Taken also gets released. That was a solid movie and Liam Neeson was glorious, then again, when isn't he? We've also got a re-release of The Terminator (evidently, the original bluray release wasn't a sub-par upgrade) as well as The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly

5/19

24: Season Seven

Yes, that is correct, the season that is currently airing will be coming to bluray in a matter of weeks. Not that I'm complaining, it's just odd that they were able to get it out that quickly.

Army of Darkness

Yeah, this movie's a masterpiece. They've released Evil Dead II, now all they need to do is release the original and put out a boxset.

Dragonball Z Fusion Reborn/ Wrath of the Dragon

The final 2 movies for the popular anime series. Unlike the live action one that came out recently, these movies are actually pretty good.

6/2

Air Force One

A solid action flick where terrorists manage to hijack Air Force One and hold the president hostage. I've got this on VHS but this will be one that I upgrade for sure

Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children

This CGI sequel to the game was a bit slow at times but the action sequences are mind blowing and would look great in 1080p greatness.

Glory

Another flick I've got on VHS that will be getting an upgrade. This civil war epic shows the story of the first all black regiment to fight. Matthew Broderick leads a great cast that also features Denzel Washington and Morgan Freeman.
