10 Greatest Superhero Movies of All Time

*Originally published on 2/9/09

10. The Incredibles

Even though it's supposed to be a parody. This movie is actually a genuine homage and bona fide superhero film that gets everything right. A testament to what the genre is capable of.

9. Batman Begins

Katie Holmes' character pulled it down a bit (as did the production of some stellar superhero films this past year). She wasn't so bad at first, but the more I watched it, the more passive agressive she becomes. It's a spot on origin story for the caped crusader though. Christian Bale does a great job and Liam Neeson is amazing as Ra's al Ghul.

8. Batman: Mask of the Phantasm

I've come to appreciate this movie more as time went on. At first, I didn't care about the flashbacks but with every viewing the movie starts to carry more weight. Like pretty much everything in the DCAU, this movie gets Batman perfectly while telling a good story and providing great action. It's a shame that this movie bombed in theaters as it really is a stellar production.

7. Batman: Return of the Joker

Stellar voice acting by all. This one is pretty disturbing for a cartoon. I disagree with the idea that it is the best thing the DCAU has produced, but it is definitely up there.

6. Hellboy

Ron Perlman pretty much carries this movie. Guillermo del Toro does a solid job bringing Mignola's work to life. It's a solid origin movie.

5. Superman

This one pretty much set the bar for superhero films to come. It's a little corny at times, which shows it's age. However, it has held up well against the passage of time very well and still holds up to this day.

4. Iron Man

TDK's rival for biggest superhero movie of the summer. Where TDK was dark and intense this is lighthearted and fun. An equally stellar cast capture the characters perfectly and show us that you don't need to be "grim and gritty" to tell a good superhero story.

3. X-Men 2

Up until TDK, this was neck and neck with Spidey, now it's a 3 way brawl which is pretty much neck and neck.

2. The Dark Knight

An epic ensemble piece. This movie pits Batman against his arch nemesis in a sprawling battle for the soul of Gotham. A strong cast, strong writing, and artful direction make this the megablockbuster that it is.

1. Spider-man 2

A damn near perfect superhero movie. It's stellar.
