I wrote an article where I envisioned various scenarios in which the Care Bears battled the DC Comics uber-villain, Darkseid. I did it mostly for my own amusement because I found the image rather funny. As I was writing about how the positive emotion based powers of the Care Bears might or might not be effective, the idea occurred to me that Vigo the Carpathian of Ghostbusters II fame would also make a fitting antagonist.
While Vigo is ruthless and over the top in terms of villainy, the more I think about it, the more I think that the Care Bears could, in fact, win if they were pit against him.
Now, if Vigo were in his original human form, they might not be able to do anything there, but the spirit we see in the aforementioned film? Yeah, they could totally take him.
How, you ask? Well, really, it comes down to his choice of power source. Ghostbusters II makes it quite clear that the spirit of Vigo is getting strength from the psychomagnatheric "mood slime" that flooded the sewers of New York (ironically enough, this slime was originally generated by Gozer cult worshipper, Ivo Shandor). It was a physical manifestation of the anger and bitterness mankind had and Vigo was able to feed on that so that he could return to our world.
Over the course of the film, the Ghostbusters realize that they can counteract this by positively charging the slime. That is to say that with happiness and love, the slime would have a different effect. If a person were, say, to be soaked in it, they would be overcome by an emotion based on the 'charge" of the slime ie. negatively charged slime makes people angry and positively charged slime makes people happy.
As Vigo's power base is directly linked to negative emotions, feelings of joy and unity make him weaker. The Ghostbusters are only able to emerge victorious thanks to both the positively charged slime, and the joy that citizens felt upon celebrating the new year.
With this in mind, the Care Bears have a major advantage in that they are all about spreading joy, happiness and love. In fact, it's kind of sad how one sided this fight is.
The only question that arises is whether or not the Care Bears would have to face Vigo directly, or whether they should descend into the sewers to use their Care Bear stare in order to change the charge of the mood slime?
I would think that there are enough Care Bears out there that they could actually split up into teams and attack him on two separate fronts. I imagine, being hit directly with those beams would weaken him (as the positively charged slime did in the film), but having his source of energy distilled would only make it that much easier.
Even if Vigo were able to initially able to deflect the Care Bear stare (he was, after all, not effected in the slightest by the proton streams), attacking the slime cuts him off at the knees and he would eventually weaken to the point where he wouldn't be able to mount a sufficient resistance.
Unless Vigo's spirit is able to find some alternate source of power, I'm afraid I have to call it and grant the victory to the Care Bears. It sounds hard to believe, and you may find it depressing, but the fact remains that they are ideally suited to take him down.
