10 Songs to Request for Prom

*Originally published on 2/16/09

Prom is a once in a lifetime experience. As such it is very important that you have solid playlists consisting of prom songs that rule. You don't want all of the songs to be lame. If you have the option to request your very own prom songs here is a list of ten possible candidates.

Runner up spot goes to Safety Dance and Jungle Love by Morris Day and the Time, because that's the mad notes right there.

10. 50 Cent: In Da Club

You may not be a big fan of rap or 50 Cent but you gotta admit that this is a pretty catchy song. It's got a good beat and is easy to dance to. For those who enjoy getting their freak on, this is a good song to do it to.

9. Bell Biv Devoe: Poison

I've asked a lot of people about it and very few know who Bell Biv Devoe is. This is something that needs to be rectified. This is a great song to dance to. This is what bands like N Sync and Backstreet Boys tried to do, only Bell Biv Devoe got it right. This is a must for any list of prom songs.

8. Boston: More Than a Feeling

Great song, no other way to slice it.

7. Pink Floyd: The Trial

This is a really weird song. It is probably the most unorthodox on my list. I don't know how effective it is as a dance tune, but Pink Floyd is so good that most students (at least the ones who have good taste in music) won't care.

6. Village People: YMCA

It's a prom staple. Even people who can't dance get out on the dance floor to mime out the letters. It gets everyone pumped up and ready to dance.

5. The Isley Brothers: Shout

Like YMCA, this song gets everyone on the floor wallflower or not.

4. Cherry Poppin Daddies: Zoot Suit Riot

This is a lesser known ditty, but it's fast and it'll allow the swing dancers to show their stuff. It's a fun tune, even if you don't dance you'll at least start bobbing your head or tapping your feet.

3. Shania Twain: Still The One

Call me an old softie, but I think this song is pretty dangit! It's perfect for those couple who want to cement a romantic prom slow dance memory.

2. The Beatles: Eight Days A Week

It was used quite well on Scrubs at Turk's wedding reception, no reason it can't work for a class prom. Besides, who doesn't like the Beatles?

1. Billy Idol: Dancing With Myself

It's upbeat, catchy, fun to dance to, and it's Billy freakin Idol. What isn't there to like?
