The Best in Fictional Weaponry: MEGAS

*Originally published on 2/29/12

When it comes to giant robots, I think that Megas tops the list. The Mechanized Earth Guard Attack System was a prototype weapon stolen by the villainous extra-terrestrial race known as the Glorft. The human resistance had taken it in hopes of turning the tide in their losing war against the invading forces. They planned to do this by sending it, along with one of their top pilots, back in time to a critical battle that more or less acted as mankind's last major stand. Unfortunately, it got sent back too far and ended up in New Jersey sometime in the 1930's.

This manages to work out for the best as the robot is found in a junkyard decades later by a pair of slackers, named Coop and Jamie, who buy the robot for a mere two dollars. As Coop is something of a gear head, he makes his own modifications, giving the robot a paint job, modifying the pilot console, and attaching a sports car to the top of the robot that had lost its head during a battle in the future.

The Megas is a dream weapon in many respects. For one thing, Coop's modifications allow it to be piloted by video game controllers. This gives the robot versatility in combat as this allows the robot to perform combo attacks that can do serious harm to enemies when engaging in close combat. This also makes it something of a dream for video game fans everywhere as many would be excited at the prospect of piloting such a robot themselves.

In terms of long range weapons, the Megas arsenal is pretty much limitless. Each episode seems to reveal a new weapon (this could be justified as the robot frequently takes heavy damage in fights and new weapons could be added during the repair process). There are cannons, missile launchers, and blade weapons aplenty. The Megas can (and frequently has) leveled entire cities in mere minutes after deploying only a portion of its available weapons.

For such a large robot, the Megas is surprisingly agile. Unlike the Megazord or other giant mechs, Megas has quick reflexes and is able to move much like a human being.

It is also equipped with rockets that allow it to fly and can even go into space for interstellar travel. Even when traveling on foot, the robot is capable of moving large distances in a short amount of time.

If the Megas has one downside is that it overpowers easily. There are times where the robot takes a lot of damage after relatively short fights. The power core frequently overheats, though this could, in part, be due to Coop's charge first and ask questions later mentality.

Giant robots are cool and no other robot showcases this fact better than Megas. Much like the Green Lantern ring, it's a dream weapon that gives the person using it everything they could ever ask for when it comes to use.
