The Best in Fictional Weaponry: The Spear of Longinus

*Originally published on 2/22/12

OK, before we get started, I should go on record and say that this article is not some passive aggressive jab at religion, nor am I making some implication that it's all a delusion. As a Christian myself, that would be counter-productive. Furthermore, that sort of rhetoric just bugs me. So you may be wondering why this particular weapon being featured. Quite simply, it's because while the artifact does have some historical relevance, it has been featured in works of fiction on more than one occasion, thus allowing it to become a "fictional weapon".

The artifact in question is the "holy lance", though it also goes by many other names such as the Spear of Destiny, the Spear of Longinus (as that is said to be the name of the guard who used it according to Scripture), or the Spear of Christ.

You see, as Christ died on the cross, one guard jabbed at him with his spear. It was done post-mortem and was a way to ensure that the man was dead and no longer had to suffer. Dead or not, the stab resulted in blood getting on said spear (and possibly allowing it to spill into what would become the Holy Grail, creating two divine artifacts in one foul swoop).

As far as fiction is concerned, this gave the spear great power. More specifically, it is said that whoever wields it cannot be defeated in battle. This could mean healing, straight up invulnerability, or perhaps some blend of both.

As such, it is no surprise that works mention that Hitler was bent on finding the artifact to serve his own ends. In fact, DC introduced the idea that Hitler's possession of the spear was the reason why none of the super powered heroes ever flew over and confronted him directly.

While a potent defensive weapon due to its mystical roots, the spear also possesses great power on the offensive end as well. Going back to comics, the spear of destiny is shown to be capable of wounding The Spectre. It is not surprising, considering that he is often said to be the literal wrath of God. In some instances, the spear has the capability to destroy the world in its entirety.

The one downside to getting your hands on such a weapon is the fact that if you lose it, you die. Some urban myths suggest that Patton got a hold of said spear and the loss was what caused Hitler to commit suicide.

It's a definite drawback to be sure, but if you can get your hands on this spear, and maintain possession of it. It is definitely a valuable addition to any arsenal.
