My Biggest Shortcomings as a Geek
Geekery is an odd thing. If you bring up the phenomenon, then most will likely question you so that you can prove yourself. It's not something that can happen overnight, but it is a state of being. While most geeks will brag about how much of a certain show they have watched, or how much they read, or how many times they went to go see a movie, I'm going to take a different tact this time and go in the other direction. That is to say that I"m going to point out facets of my life that don't fall in line with the traditional geek lifestyle. Submitted for your approval, my biggest shortcomings as a geek.
I was underwhelmed by Firefly
If you were to ask around, you would get the impression that Firefly was a brilliant gem that was taken before its time. It gets widely hailed as a masterpiece, so much so that even Joss Whedon's most rabid detractors make a point to say that they enjoyed the Sci-fi Western.
I've got to tell you, I was underwhelmed. It's nerd blasphemy to say it, but I didn't fangasm over this show the way the rest of the geek community did. It's a good show, don't get me wrong. I'm not bashing on it, but I wasn't blown away by the series either. It's good, but like so many things, I think that the hype does more harm than good as your expectations will be raised significantly to the point where the show doesn't live up.
I've never played a game of Dungeons and Dragons
Until LARPing (live action role playing) came along, this was about as geeky as you could get. It wasn't that I was averse to playing, but nothing about it really grabbed my attention either. There was that and the fact that the idea of playing never really came up in my social circles back in the day.
This is actually one that I can amend, as I have become rather interested in playing. I've even managed to find friends who would be willing to get a group together, we just need to acquire the materials necessary to work a campaign.
So, there you have it, ladies and gentlemen, the primary facts that would put my geek cred into question. Luckily, it's not enough to outweigh all the things I have in the plus column, but that's a discussion for another day.
