Stephen King playlist

Hour 1

*Originally published on 8/24/09

It should be noted that this isn't concrete.  I didn't get together with Mr. King and he didn't take out his laptop to say "hey let me show you my music library and playlists".  He has, however, mentioned a lot of the bands he listens to on more than one occasion and I know that he writes for four hours a day as it's part of his "read four hours a day, write four hours a day" mantra.  I took this information and put it all together into a sort of educated guesstimate.

1. Metallica The Ecstasy of Gold (2:30)
This song requires a bit of explanation.  Movie buffs will point out that this isn't technically a Metallica song.  It was actually composed by Ennio Morricone for the soundtrack to The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly.  They do open all of their live shows with it and did a cover of it though (which is why I'm adding it on technicality).  More importantly though, if King really does plan on rewriting the remaining six books in the Dark Tower series, I can't think of a better song to put him in that cowboy/western mindset.  Besides, it's just an awesome song in general.

2. Metallica  The Collect Call of Ktulu (8:53)
With Stephen King being the horror guru that he is, it's only fitting that a Lovecraft inspired song by one of his favorite groups makes it into his rotation.  It may not have any lyrics, but it's a great song regardless.
3.Guns N' Roses   Mr. Brownstone (3:49)

4. Aerosmith  Dream On (4:28)
This song used to play during my weight training class in high school.  It's a classic.  I have a feeling this song would also be fun to sing at a karaoke bar.

5. Metallica  The Unforgiven (6:27)

6. Metallica  The Unforgiven II  (6:35)
Whenever I hear the first Unforgiven, I feel compelled to listen to the second one right after.  As such, I put them back to back here.

7. Led Zeppelin Dazed and Confused (6:26)

8. Guns N' Roses  Paradise City (6:46)

9.  Guns N'Roses  Knockin on Heaven's Door (5:33)
Like Dream On, this song was made for karaoke.  I actually like this version better than the Grateful Dead version.  Eric Clapton did a pretty good job with this song as well, but this one remains the favorite of the versions that I've heard.

10. Led Zeppelin:  The Immigrant Song (2:23)

11.  AC/DC Let There Be Rock (8:33)  62:22
This song is a pain to play on Rock Band.  It really is.  It's a great song though, then again, what song by AC/DC isn't?

Hour 2

1 Led Zeppelin  Stairway to Heaven (8:01)
This one may seem a tad predictable, but it's predictable for a reason.  I mean, come on, it's Stairway. I originally had it further down on the playlist, but moved it up so that we could segue to

2.  AC/DC: Highway to Hell    (3:28)

3.  AC/DC   Hell's Bells     (5:13)

4. Metallica   For Whom the Bell Tolls   (5:11)
I put all three of these back to back due to the linking titles.  They're all great songs, but as far as placement goes, it was the transition in titles that determined what order I put them in.

5. Aerosmith     Livin' on the Edge   (6:07)

6. Aerosmith  Janie's Got a Gun  (5:31)
You might think I"m going for some sort of "mortality" theme with these picks, but it's actually just coincidence.  I was just looking for good songs and it turned out that way.

7.  Guns n' Roses    Sweet Child o' MIne  (5:57)
I'm trying to get some of the "easy" picks out of the way early.  Though despite being at about the halfway point, there are still plenty left.  Still, this is a great song that I never get tired of listening to.  Plus, it lends itself to that head bob thing that Axel Rose does all the time.  You can't go with a full on crab dance as it's impossible in a sitting position, but it's the next best thing.

8. AC/DC  Money Talks (3:50)

9. Aerosmith  One Way Street  (7:02)

10. Led Zeppelin  Heartbreaker  (5:16)  55:36
Not to be confused with the Pat Benatar song of the same name (though that's an awesome tune as well)

11. Led Zeppelin  Communication Breakdown  (3:13) 58:49

Hour 3

1.  Metallica:  The Memory Remains (4:42)
It's a good song on its own, but I prefer the live version of this one just because Hetfield gets the crowd going at the end.

2. Metallica: No Leaf Clover  (5:43)
Metallica plus orchestra equals an automatic win.

3. Guns n' Roses: Welcome to the Jungle (4:33)
It's the probably the most well known Guns n' Roses song as well as a fan favorite, and why shouldn't it be? It's a great song.

4. AC/DC:  You Shook Me All Night Long  (3:32)

5. Aerosmith:  Train Kept a Rollin (5:33)

6. AC/DC:  Back in Black  (4:22)

7.  Metallica: Sad But True  (5:24)

8. AC/DC:  TNT   (3:34)

9. Guns N' Roses:  Civil War (7:41)

10. AC/DC:  Big Balls (2:40)
This song is not only an awesome song (it's AC/DC, that's to be expected) but it is also quite amusing.

11. Led Zeppelin:  You Shook Me  (6:28)

12: Led Zeppelin:  Whole Lotta Love  (5:34) 59:26

Hour 4

1. AC/DC: Rock n' roll Ain't Noise Pollution  (4:12)
It's true.

2.  Metallica: One (7:26)
This is a pretty dark song.  It's a great one, and like Let There Be Rock, it's a pain to play on Rock Band.  The solo at the end is amazing.

3. AC/DC: Thunderstruck  (4:52)

4. Metallica: Wherever I May Roam (6:44)

5. AC/DC:  Dirty Deeds Done Dirt Cheap  (4:11)

6. Guns n' Roses:  November Rain (8:58)

7. Led Zeppelin: Achilles' Last Stand (10:23)

8. Guns n' Roses: Down on the Farm (3:27)
This song has an old school punk Sex PIstols-esque feel to it.  It's a tad redundant, but it's catchy.  Plus, it ends with Axel baa-ing like a sheep.

9. Led Zeppelin: The Battle of Evermore (5:52)
This isn't quite as hard rock as a lot of the others, but it's still a great song.  I could definitely seeing it as effective writing music.

10. Jimi Hendrix: All Along the Watchtower (4:01) 60:05
For most of this series, I stuck with the same 5 bands.  Given the expansive discographies of these bands, it wasn't all that hard to fill out a four hour playlist.  I just thought I'd end on a curveball and throw some Hendrix in there, spice it up a bit.
