Tips for Ghostbusters: The Video Game

Slime Door

Later during the Shandor island level, your character will fall through a trap door and end up in a labyrinthine set of tunnels. At one point, you will come to a large room. There is a narrow walkway around the perimeter, but the center of the room is a pit filled with deadly black slime. If you head along the right side of the room the walkway will break. I would recommend going this way first though, just to clear out any black slime with your slime blower.

Head back the other way until you reach the far side of the room. You'll come to a door. Scan the markings with your PKE meter first. On each side of the door, up near the ceiling are a set of weights. This door slowed me down quite a bit as I didn't know what I was looking for. Just slime tether both weights to the ground and the door will open draining the slime.

Several portals will open down below releasing those crab like creatures, be sure to take those out first. You will have to deal with a slime monster, but closing those portals will make it easier for you in the long run.

Castle door on Shandor Island

Honestly, unless you know what you're looking for, some of these doors are ridiculous. When you try to enter the castle, the door mystically slams in your face. Throw all the boson darts, meson bolts, or proton streams you want that door isn't going down. What you need to do is go down into the hedge maze and head straight and to the right. You can try to navigate the hedge maze, but I find it's much less of a hassle to just torch it all and go straight for the goal. The goal, in this case, is a large mechanical crank. Just turn it clockwise with your slime tether and the door will open.

Destructor achievement

This achievement is gained by causing 3 million dollars in property damage. It sounds simple enough, just blast everything you see, right? Well, yes and no. The thing is that only certain things add to your total. Blasting at walls or some light fixtures won't do anything. Also, the level where you return to the hotel is your last chance to add to the total, Shandor Island and the mausoleum offer nothing to destroy, nothing that adds to your total anyway. This achievement will be made or broken based on how much destruction you cause in two levels: Times Square and the Museum. If you come up short on these two levels, all hope is lost.

Now, I've read that you can actually get this achievement in Times Square alone, I needed both levels however. The boson dart is your best friend in this case. It will destroy cars faster than your proton stream will, and it will decimate museum displays in a prompt fashion. Blast every car and bus you see in Times Square, as well as every statue and display in the museum and you should get the achievement. I blasted everything in the firehouse and hotel as well, just to be safe, but I surpassed the mark by enough that it really wouldn't have mattered if I did or not.

Cherubs

I hate these buggers; I really do. From what I've read, they are the bane of players' existence. They are these flaming (and I mean that they are literally on fire) stone gargoyle babies that stay high up in the air and swoop down out of nowhere. No matter which way you're facing, they get you from behind. When you get to this point, you and Ray are in one area with the other three ghostbusters on the other side of a gate with Ecto-1. You're essentially on your own here. The three ghostbusters just stand there and watch and Ray will pretty much focus on the animated tombstones so those cherubs are your problem.

One of the ghostbusters will tell you to slime tether them to something. No, no, no, you don't want to do that. I mean, you can, but you'll die a lot more frequently and it makes it much more challenging and frustrating than it needs to be. These buggers are annoying enough; there's no reason to add more stress to the ordeal. Your best weapon here is the capture stream, it's more accurate and once you have them in your grasp, you can just slam them down into the ground.

Keep moving

This is especially important during some of the boss fights. Not so much with Slimer or Stay-Puft, but with the bosses who come shortly after. The library ghost will pummel you no matter where you go, but you're still better off moving than standing still. The other bosses are more easily evadable. This will also help with the aforementioned cherubs.

Use your arsenal

The first time I played this game, I pretty much stuck with the proton stream. This is Ghostbusters and the proton beam is their primary weapon. I used the slime blower on occasion, but I stuck with the tried and true traditional proton pack for a majority of the game. You can do this with little trouble, however the other weapons are quite useful.

The meson collider is a surprisingly effective weapon, once you buy the attachments to delay overheating and add rapid fire it's a joy to use. This is especially effective with the zombies you will encounter later in the game. It is also helpful against the spider-witch as she is fairly quick and this has the ability to lock on to enemies to a degree.

The stasis stream is also helpful, especially against the larger golems that will frequently charge at you. Just use it to slow them to a crawl, vent the pack, and then blast em with another weapon. While the AI uses it frequently, I haven't found any use for the shotgun mode that also comes with the stasis set up on your pack. It may work better for you, so feel free to try it out and see how you like it.

It's not quite a walk through, while I've beaten the game a few times now. I still haven't gotten it memorized just yet. The sewer tunnels and mausoleum still require a bit of exploration on my part, hopefully this offers some assistance in game play.
