It's not the most American thing to say, I'll admit, but darn it all, I enjoy the Soviet National Anthem. It's a fine piece of music to listen to and it works on quite a few levels.
It has a sort of majesty to it that fits with the idea many people have of Mother Russia. At the same time, it has a creepy undertone to it. The scene in Rocky IV when Rocky and Drago are staring each other down in the ring is made all the more effective when you set it to this music.
As for the lyrics themselves, I have no idea how they are as I don't speak Russian. My knowledge of the Russian language consists of "Da" and "Nyet". I'm sure it glorifies the nation as any national anthem would.
Normally in circumstances like this, I post a video as well. While there are plenty of videos on Youtube of the song, they are accompanied by videos and slideshows that glorify the Communist regimes of old. It's not surprising at all, but at the same time, it's enough to make me uncomfortable posting it on the blog.
Even if I did agree with the politics, I wouldn't want to post it just because this isn't a place for me to get on a soapbox and preach politics. It's a place to showcase various things that I think kick ass, and while the song makes a great listen, it's not worth posting a video like that and risking someone viewing it as a political statement.
I know it sounds wrong to endorse it, but it's a good song, and while you may still hold some ill will towards our former Cold War nemesis, you might find yourself liking this song as I do. If you don't want to subject yourselves to the slideshows, that's understandable, but you can find the song other places where you can just enjoy the music itself without getting into the politics behind it.
