A while back, I discussed the slate of movies that Marvel Studios had planned to release in the coming years. With the upcoming release of Iron Man 2, we will get to see the follow up to the events of the last two movies, Iron Man and The Incredible Hulk. Nick Fury will likely play a larger role and the universe building will continue.
As said before, it is all building up to the comic blockbuster to end all comic blockbusters, The Avengers, where the heroes will all team up to take on a threat that they wouldn't be able to on their own. The question remains, what is this threat? There are several theories and speculations, but no definite answers. Still, that doesn't stop us from making some educated guesses.
There's been talk of Hulk being the villain. While Banner was able to "aim" the monster's rage at the Abomination in the movie, that doesn't mean he's controlled it completely. Who's to say that he won't lose control? Note that at the end of The Incredible Hulk, Stark went to General Ross as opposed to Banner to talk about the team that they're putting together. If he really did want to recruit Hulk, why would he approach Ross? Ross is the man you want to go to when you want to stop Hulk, not try to get him to join the team.
Whatever the threat is, SHIELD already knows about it, it's why they're putting the team together in the first place. It would make sense that they are trying to put a stop to Hulk's rampages once and for all. Given the Hulk's strength, it would take a whole team of heroes to take him down, so it is a logical conclusion.
I'm rather torn on this idea. a Hulk vs. Avengers fight would be pretty cool to see. Said fight was the major highlight of the animated Ultimate Avengers direct to video movie and seeing a similar brawl on the big screen would be jaw dropping.
On the other hand, it takes some of the fun out of it when the heroes are fighting one of their own. The cool thing about the Avengers (as well as DC's Justice League) is that you see all the heroes fighting side by side against a super-foe. While the Hulk could qualify as a super-foe, he is usually the protagonist. I would be quite happy to see the raging brute fighting along side the other heroes.
We do know that Tom Hiddleston will be reprising his role as Loki in the film, so there's a good chance that he will play a part. They could combine the two and have Loki somehow gain control of the Hulk, or remove Banner's influence, much like he did in the Hulk Vs. release. This seems to work best as you have the ability to pit the Hulk against the other heroes while providing an opponent for them to attack once Hulk snaps out of it.
The Leader is also a possibility. The Incredible Hulk left an awesome teaser of Samuel Sterns beginning his transformation into the villain. Originally, it was supposed to be for a sequel, but there has been no word on said sequel, so if they do plan on dropping the Hulk follow ups, why not follow it up in the big team up movie?
Again though, SHIELD knows of the threat, so having the Leader wouldn't make sense as the major threat since he was made after Fury had already approached Stark.
When it comes to super hero team ups, you can't go wrong with an alien invasion. Using advanced technology, they would be able to detect the fleet of ships, and as such, would have time to prepare. It would also make sense that Stark would contact an army general to pool their resources to prepare for the oncoming onslaught. Being a DC guy, I'm not too familiar with all of the races in Marvel, but the Skrulls seem like a safe bet. Of course with that, you have to wonder how Loki would play into it.
Another safe bet would be to have the villains all join forces. They've done it before in the comics and video games, so why not have them team up in the movie? Sure, villains like the Leader, Abomination, and Whiplash, would be added to the roster later, but who's to say that Loki and Red Skull haven't already started assembling a villainous team to enact some nefarious plot? SHIELD discovers this and it prompts them to put their own team together to try and stop them.
Right now, a lot of it is still in talks. While many of the cast are signed, there are still a few kinks that need to be worked out with other actors. The movie is still two and a half years away, so we probably won't get any real news for a while, but it is fun to speculate and try to guess where the crew is going with this story line.
