4 Best Blurays of 2008

*Originally published on 11/26/08

With the war between HD-DVD and Bluray now settled and the Christmas season upon us. I feel it behooves me to look back upon some of the great releases that we've gotten, not just for nostalgia's sake, but to act as a list of possible gift items for the movie fanatic in your family.

The Dark Knight

Nolan's sequel to Batman Begins, although it hasn't been released yet, many are saying that this will be the hot ticket item this year. Having made almost a billion dollars worldwide, and with a million copies shipping to stores, this is the bluray that is going to raise the bar for movies yet to come and, perhaps, make the disc format more mainstream.

Band of Brothers

I haven't actually seen this series in its entirety. However, I have yet to hear a bad thing about it. It has been unanimously praised as a brilliant work. My roommate is very excited about picking this up on Bluray. I have no doubt that this will take full advantage of what high definition has to offer.

Shoot em Up

This movie is gloriously absurd. It looks great in high def, not surprising given the high octane action that permeates this film. A must buy for your brother, husband, or boyfriend as this is perhaps the quintessential guy movie.

The Ultimate Matrix Collection

Say what you will about these movies, but they are visually stunning. The sequels weren't as good as the original, this is true, but that doesn't take away from the slack jawed look your face will have when you see how amazing these movies look in HD.
