Real Ghostbusters mega-post

I've been a fan of Ghostbusters all my life.  I've loved the movies and grew up watching the cartoon.  When Time Life released a "Complete Series" boxed set, I was quick to buy it.  I finally got around to going through the series and the show is even better than I remember it.

There's a reason why this show has held up over the years as well as it did and that's simple quality.  These episodes are genuinely good.  They have humor, but have elements of creepiness that make it that much more interesting to watch.

It captures the spirit of the movies, not just in tone, but in character.  The writers nailed every one of the four and even did a pretty good job with Janine, though she was more peripheral than the others.  Just watching them banter back and forth was entertaining enough, but the stories were quite solid.

The writers managed to incorporate spirits and beings from a wide variety of mythologies and even threw in some nods to classic literature.  One episode has the Ghostbusters battling Cthulhu himself.  If that doesn't make you squee, I don't know what will.

The only downside of this show is Slimer.  I hate him; he sucks.  The fact that the executives decided to give him a larger focus in the show's later seasons vexes me to no end.  The show really is so much better when he's nowhere to be seen, it's uncanny.  Alas, things went down as they did.

In any event, this show is a gem.  Definitely check out those early episodes, especially the syndicated ones as they really are a joy to watch.  Going back and watching these episodes is fun for nostalgia sake, but the fact that the episodes are as good as they are makes it all the more worthwhile.
