First things first, I did use Alan Moore's classic Superman story title as inspiration for the title. It is simply an homage and it fits the article.
A couple of decades ago women banded together to fight for their rights. They knew that they could be successful in the workplace and that they were not meant to be confined to a kitchen. These women were true pioneers and crusaders who fought for equality and respect.
In recent years, the feminist movement has taken a few major hits. While society isn't exactly equal, it's very close. Women do have the capability of being very successful if they have the drive and desire. As such, there are skirmishes, but no real fights to engage in. Even worse is the fact that bitter angry women with emotional issues and an irrational hatred of men have hijacked the movement and used it as their own personal shield.
Nowadays, when people hear the word "feminist" they envision someone like Marcy Rhoades or that redhead on Sex and the City, women who claim that they're oppressed and that men are the root of all evil. Really, they're unpleasant shrews who are looking for a scapegoat. They aren't pro-woman, they're anti-man (and yes, there is a difference). The true feminists took a backseat and have had their good names tarnished by these "feminazis".
It's gotten to the point where if a woman chooses to stay home and raise her family, or if she opposes abortion for moral reasons, she's seen as representing a step back in the women's movement. Really, the step back was made when the angry harpies who claim to be feminists rose to power. Of course, you couldn't call them on it, oh no, than you're afraid of them because they're "strong and independent women".
Let me tell you that there is a difference between being strong and independent and being an unpleasant shrew. I know several women who are strong, confident, assertive, and intelligent. I do not fear them because they are some of the nicest people I've ever met. They don't back down. They can hold their own in an argument and they won't just lie back and let people walk all over them; but they don't come off as angry and bitter.
The fight for equality isn't over. I don't doubt that. But if feminism is to make any progress, they need to weed out the misandrists and call them on their hatred. The true feminists need to take back the podium and oust the women who have tainted their crusade for equality. The message needs to return to its roots. It's not all about screaming and burning your bras and calling men pigs or walking abortions. It's about pointing out that there is a lack of respect and saying that you deserve said respect.
