How to make a grilled cheese sandwich

*Originally published on 3/13/09

I know this may seem like a no-brainer to many of you readers, but there are people who have never cooked a thing in their life (we all fell into that category at one point remember). People need to start somewhere, why not start with something simple like a grilled cheese sandwich? It's both simple and delicious.
To make a grilled cheese sandwich you'll need:

Bread (2 slices per each sandwich you want to make)
Cheese (I go with 2 slices of Kraft Singles, but how much you use is up to you)
Butter
a Frying Pan
Spatula
Knife
and of course, a stove

First, take out a frying pan and place it on the stove. Turn the stove on to whatever setting you like, the higher the better as that will cook the sandwiches quicker. I set my stove to 8 as it's done fairly quickly but gives me a little bit of time to take care of other things while the sandwich cooks.

While the pan heats up, butter up one side of each slice of bread. Be sure to cover the whole slice as it will stick to the pan and ruin the sandwich if you don't cover it thoroughly enough.

Take one slice of bread and toss it on the pan, butter side down. While that side is cooking, take your cheese and lay it on top of the bread. Take your second slice and set it on top, butter side up. After a minute (I mean a literal minute, 2 minutes and you'll burn the sandwich to a crisp) flip the sandwich with a spatula. The time varies by setting so a sandwich could burn in a minute if you have your stove set to high. My roommate actually prefers his sandwiches burnt so your own personal preference plays an issue here.
