Fall is upon us once again, and that means that shows are gearing up for their new seasons. CW has quite a few things on the horizon that get me anxious to see the season start up. Submitted for your approval, ten reasons why I'm looking forward to the 2010 CW season and, by extension, the upcoming premiere week. If it seems like all of my items revolve around Smallville and Supernatural, it's because those are pretty much the only two shows I watch on the network, as such, they are what I'm most excited for.
10. Smallville reaches its final season
I kind of have a love/hate thing going on with Smallville. I keep hoping that it will blow me away and it consistently leaves me disappointed, Geoff Johns written episodes notwithstanding. This last season was relatively strong, let's hope that the momentum continues.
9. Return of Jonathan Kent
Despite dying back in the show's fifth season, previews confirm that Jonathan Kent is going to appear, most likely in a flashback or dream sequence. John Schneider was quite good in the role, so it'll be good to see him again.
8. Two shows reach their end
I'm a fan of both Smallville and Supernatural, but all good things have to come to an end and both shows have had good runs. Seeing as this is the final season for both shows, I expect big things to happen to act as a capper for both of the series ongoing story arcs.
7. Blue and Gold
It's been announced that Blue Beetle and Booster Gold are set to appear at some point this season. For those curious, it's going to be Jaime as the Beetle (maybe acting as a backdoor pilot for the upcoming live action series?) but there's a chance that Ted Kord might make an appearance as well. If you've read Giffen and DeMatteis' run on JLI, than you know how much fun these two characters are and it will be a blast seeing them brought to life.
6. Return of Lex Luthor
For all of the show's faults, one of the things that viewers of Smallville always praised was Michael Rosenbaum's portrayal of Lex Luthor. His character was killed earlier in the series, though I think about 0 of us expected it to stick. It's been said that Lex has a backup for everything, probably leading to a storyline similar to the one that transpired in the 90s when he transplanted his brain into a clone to pose as his own son.
5. Bonus season of Supernatural
Kripke has said that the show was meant to go for only five seasons, but when the fifth one ended, CW signed on for another one anyway. While he won't be the head writer, he will still be present as a producer and one of the show's other producers will step in. Hopefully, the change goes unnoticed, but I'm fairly confident that the sixth season will continue to deliver the same gloriousness that the other seasons have.
4. Supernatural mocks Twilight
Sure, it's a bit old hat at this point, but when the Supernatural writers poke fun at something, they usually succeed in spades so this should be fun times. It'll be interesting to see how it's worked in considering vampires have already been introduced on the show and are not of your sparkly variety.
3. More Castiel
Adding the character of Castiel to the permanent cast of the show was a stroke of genius. He completely steals the show in almost every episode he's in. The fact that he's loosely based on John Constantine is just the cherry on top of the sundae.
2. Clark finally dons the outfit
We've waited ten years and put up with the ups and downs of the show, but finally we're going to see Clark Kent become Superman. It's been teased extensively throughout the show, so the payoff better be worth the wait.
1. Darkseid
It's been pretty much confirmed that the lord of Apokolips will be the main villain in the show's final season. The talk of him being different from the comics worries me, but we'll see. Maybe they're going with something more along the lines of Grant Morrison's work where the New Gods manifested as crime bosses. I'm not sure, but it'll be interesting to see none the less.
