DC Announces Next Arc in Green Lantern Comics

*Originally published on 1/18/10

Harvey Dent said that it's darkest just before the dawn. Such is the case in the Green Lantern books as the heroes fought off a horde of undead hero and villain zombies within the pages of the mega-event, Blackest Night. With the arc coming to an end in March, many comic book readers have wondered what will come next. We finally have our answer.

To follow up the Blackest Night, DC has announced Brightest Day, the big event for Green Lantern in 2010. It may seem obvious, but it is a natural follow up and it does tie into the now classic oath that the Green Lanterns take.

The first issue (or issue 0, I should say) will ship in April. From there, the series will go for 26 issues and will ship on a biweekly schedule.

It seems to me that DC has not lost its affinity for yearlong series. I would question how the story can progress for 26 issues, but if it means that there aren't any tie ins and it's a self contained story like 52 or Trinity, than I'm all for it going for 26 issues.

It's been announced that other DC titles such as The Flash, Titans, Birds of Prey and Justice League of America will fall under the Brightest Day banner. Apparently, DC is planning to use Brightest Day as a movement as well as a story. I'm not sure what that means exactly. It kind of sounds like their way of saying that they are making tie ins without actually using the Z-word. I know that tie ins have become an increasing frustration for comic readers when it comes to these kind of events and I get the impression that they are trying to have their cake and eat it too. I could be wrong though. It could just be a case of the comics moving to a lighter tone and they are using the banner to reflect that.

Given that there will be another year long weekly series featuring the JLI, it's not all that surprising. DC has gotten a lot of flak for going too dark with their superhero stories so maybe this is a way of showing that they can still do lighthearted, fun stories.

I, myself, need to get caught up on my comics. I haven't been able to venture out to my local shop for a while, but I"m still pretty excited for this event. I've really been digging Geoff Johns work and I'm glad that DC is keeping that team around to work this story. If nothing else, Didio understands the concept of not trying to fix what isn't broken, at least in this instance.

I'm pretty excited to see what comes of this story. I'm not quite as hyped as I was for Blackest Night, but the trailer we saw at the end of Sinestro Corps War was enough to make me quite giddy. The announcement was cool, but it didn't have quite the same impact.
