A while back, I made a comment to my then roommate that I was surprised that, with the spread of podcasts, that audio dramas weren't making a comeback. Upon hearing this, he did a quick google search and discovered that some people had, in fact, started making their own audio productions. He got hooked on quite a few, but two in particular caught my attention. The first one was "We're Alive" a Zombie story, which I'll probably talk about at some point, and a science fiction adventure series called "The Leviathan Chronicles".
While the plot is far more complex, the basic premise can be summed up as "Highlander meets The Abyss". Again, that's a bit of an oversimplification, but the general idea should give you a good sense of the series plot line.
The episodes can be downloaded for free from iTunes or on the show's website. I, as a fan of free things, like that. While the first season is over and the second is on hiatus, the creators have also released special edition episodes that act as supplementary material. These episodes cost about two dollars each as the creators are hoping to monetize their product. I would put forth the idea of loading the episodes to blip as that brings in money from ad revenue based on views. Essentially, people will still get the free product while allowing the producers to pull in some revenue. This will also work out for the producers as revenue increases with every click as opposed to a one time mp3 download transaction.
When I was listening to it for the first time, I found myself hooked. I ended up listening to several episodes in a row, hoping to find out more about the characters and the mysterious circumstances they found themselves in.
As a writer myself, I also found it inspiring. Listening to it made me want to start writing fiction again. I had gotten so accustomed to the idea of focusing on web articles that I found the desire to come up with a story idea rather refreshing.
This series is a great listen, and I look forward to going through it again once season 2 starts up. If you're a fan of audio books or dramas, I highly recommend this series. It is a great addition to your mp3 player and would keep you occupied if you're going on a long road trip for a vacation.
