Twilight Beats The Dark Knight at MTV Movie Awards

*Originally published on 6/1/09

I caught the tail end of this year's MTV movie awards. I couldn't sleep and it was something to watch. It was in the last few minutes and I was kind of curious to see what movie would be voted best picture.

Denzel Washington and his daughter came out to present the award. The nominees were as follows: Iron Man, Slumdog Millionaire, The Dark Knight, High School Musical 3, and Twilight. I thought to myself, OK, it's either going to be Iron Man or Dark Knight. There is no way humanity would vote either Twilight or High School Musical 3 as best picture. It just couldn't happen

I mean, TDK, was one of the biggest movies of all time. It was the first superhero movie to get Oscar acclaim. It blew everyone away and it actually did live up to the massive hype that was behind it. The movie had broken records opening day just from midnight showings alone. The fan base was loyal and devoted. Even if fans of Twilight voted repeatedly, our fan base was stronger. It had been months since TDK's release, Batman had time to prepare so there was no way he was going to lose to Edward Cullen.

Iron Man was a surprise hit and it was a crowd-pleaser. It was a solid, well written comic movie that managed to be fun as well. Robert Downey Jr. gave a great performance and it was a solid effort all around. If it had won best movie, I would've been fine with it. Some said that The Dark Knight was too dark. There is something to that as it is a pretty intense movie. A lot of people go to the theater to be entertained and Iron Man delivered on that front.

I haven't seen Slumdog Millionaire. It was the Oscar darling this year and from what I've heard it is good. However, one of the neat things about the MTV movie awards is that the viewers vote and pick the winners for each category. It isn't a group of hoity toity film "experts" but us, the moviegoers, who decide what the best performances were as well as the best movie.

Denzel opened the envelope and announced the winner....Twilight. I threw my hands up in shock and disgust. Look, Twilight's not the worst movie ever. I'm not going to say that you're scraping the bottom of the barrel with this movie. There are several movies I can think of off the top of my head that are worse: The Spirit (oh ye gods The Spirit), Cabin Fever, Catwoman, Date Movie and any of its ilk. Still, the movie was pretty bad. I know that I am not the target demographic for the movies or the books, but even taking this into account there's no possible way that Twilight beats The Dark Knight. Just, no.

It doesn't compute in any way. Try as my brain might, it can't comprehend how the results came out the way they did. I was almost tempted to make this into a video post just so that you could see my stunned reactions, plus it just leaves me speechless. I'm rather surprised and pleased with myself that there aren't more elipses spread throughout the article so far because even now my brain's having trouble coming up with words to respond to this travesty.

I may seem biased, being a comic fan, and yes I'll admit that it is a factor. However, just looking at the two films as films that stand on their own. I ask you, in what way does Twilight beat The Dark Knight? The acting is better, the character development is better, the story is better, the dialogue is better, the action is better. So, what's the thought process here?

How did this happen!? It just boggles my mind. It's not right man! I mean come on, Twilight? Really? I, ugh, this vexes me. It really does. Movie buff that I am, my brain can't let this go. It's a travesty. Even fans of the book weren't crazy about it. Heck, fans of the books aren't crazy about the books. This, it's not right!

I said earlier that putting the vote in the people's hands is a good thing. In theory this is true, however when they drop the ball like this it's very frustrating and depressing. We got cocky and became lax in our voting. I myself didn't vote. I didn't think to. So I take my share of responsibility for allowing this to happen. We have to make a vow though, never again will we let something like this happen.

I already had my doubts about this generation. We went to a baseball game the other day and on the jumbotron or whatever you want to call it, they showed a guy asking a young boy when he should call the Ghostbusters. He had no clue who the Ghostbusters were. My soul had just recovered from that blow and this happens.

OK, I think you guys get the jist of my thoughts on this so I'm gonna try to wrap this up. One quick thing though, Edward Cullen is viewed as some romantic figure. Did the tween girls see a different movie than I did? He breaks into her house and watches her sleep?! That's not romantic, it's creepy and stalkerish!

OK, I'm done. MTV, you fail at movies forever.
