Stephen King and Mummies

*Originally published on 9/6/09

Stephen King has had a long and illustrious career.  Through the years, Mr. King has written books about a lot of the major icons of horror: vampires, werewolves, zombies, and this may be a stretch but I see Pet Sematary as a replacement for Frankenstein's Monster.  The means are different, as well as the overall message, but the idea of dead things coming back to life wrong remains in both books.
There is one horror icon that, surprisingly, Stephen King has missed.  That icon is the mummy.  Maybe, King just doesn't find them all that scary, or he's had so many other projects that the idea just slipped his mind; I don't know.

It would be interesting to see his take on the monsters though.  King does a good job creating elaborate and well thought out stories.  I have no doubt that he'd be able to make his own impression.

While it seems like there isn't much potential for variety as far as mummies go, people still manage to take unique approaches, as an example, I point you to the awesomeness that is Bubba Ho-Tep.
Even if there is no new approach, King can still craft a good read.  Salem's Lot is a pretty straight-forward vampire story, and it remains one of the greats in his collection to this day.

I don't know if King will ever get to mummies in his books, but it is something I would be interested in reading.
